FOUR POEMS OF GIRDHAR RATHI

WARD NO.: 15

The sky is bound by the wall
Along the boundary the papayas
The eye is bound by the papayas.

INSTRUCTION

We too, one day
Even we
Shall have to answer

And so
Should we keep a diary
Let's keep it true
Should we draft a petition
Let's draft it with care

But it's not peace we adore
And be and not repent
Let's not smudge
These bright white sheets!

Girdhar Rathi is a well-known Hindi poet, and translator. We present four of his mini poems. These have been translated from the original Hindi by the poet himself.

LULLABY OF THE SLEEPLESS

Let the snakes hiss and fall asleep
Let the ants make home and fall asleep
Let the guards whistle up and fall asleep.

UNILATERAL

Killers we got ready
Who knows, might be asleep.
Is their powder spent,
Manning another site, are they?
Or still to get their month's wages?

Then only these killers remain
The ones in front of us
Alert and equipped
Ready to fire
Right ahead.

On this page we focus on a single poet regularly.
